This is an easy & cheap magnetic levitation experiment that you can do in your home. It requires no power and relies on the (very strong, unidirectional) diamagnetic properties of pyrolitic graphite. The square of graphite is levitating several millimeters above the magnets, and will stay there until disturbed, without power.
For $20 you can buy the kit (search for "Levitation Bundle").
This is just one of a bunch of cool experiments described in detail at Science Toys. If you just want raw materials to play around with at home, the SciToys Catalog sells lots of interesting stuff.
Here's a quick list of some of the other experiments shown at Science Toys:
- The Gauss Rifle: A Magnetic Linear Accelerator
- A Curie-effect heat engine
- A Magnetic Ring Launcher
- An electric motor in 10 minutes
- A 10 minute railgun
- Building your own solar battery
- A quick and simple radio
- A simple AM transmitter
- Simple heat engines
- A Bernoulli levitation ball
There are links to all of these experiments and tons more from the home page.
